On behalf of her Foundation, Ellen MacArthur was today presented with the keys to an electric Kangoo – one of the first to come off the production line – by Carlos Tavares.

“It’s an immense pleasure for me to be able to hand over the keys of an electric Kangoo to the Ellen MacArthur Foundation,” saidCarlos Tavares. “Together, we believe that protecting the environment only makes sense if it involves the vast majority of people. This in turn calls for a real commitment from businesses to propose clean yet affordable innovations. With Ellen MacArthur Foundation, we are convinced that Kangoo Z.E. has the wind in its sails.”

Ellen MacArthur praised… “Renault’s commitment to the marketing of readily affordable electric cars. This is a decisive step towards a viable, long-term economic model. Fluence Z.E. was faster than a powerful electric roadster… The car was acclaimed for its exemplary manoeuvrability, its time on the test circuit and its energy efficiency (covering 215km without recharging).

Fluence Z.E.’s entire well-to-wheel CO₂ output was also recognised with an award (it was much lower than that of a hybrid vehicle). And the car received a design award for the best integration of battery charging solutions in the vehicle. Fluence Z.E. has set a tough precedent…

Renault unveiled Kangoo Z.E. concept at the 2008 Paris Motor Show with a promise to make it widely available to motorists starting in 2012. Some people said it would never happen…

Three years later, the range has become a reality. To honour this commitment, the Renault-Nissan Alliance invested €4 billion and deployed a 2,000-strong team to work on the technology. The other ingredients were a little pinch of madness and a good dose of passion.

Renault estimates that electric vehicles will account for 10% of the world market by 2020. Buying an electric car now gives you a head start on the rest!
